For an intermediate flute, I'd recommend an Emerson.  They are reasonably priced, even at the 6 model level they offer a hand cut headjoint.  This results is very good projection.  We purchased a 6 with a silver head, plated body for my daughter during middle school.  This flute has been checked over periodically, but has not needed repair during the last 7 years.  It has sounded good enough to get her through college auditions and playing as a concerto soloist.  We are upgrading for college now, but have been extremely pleased at what she's been able to do with this instrument.
