Reading the Lines and Spaces

Depending on where the notes lie on the staff determines the pitch of that note. There are 12 different pitches that repeat in different octaves.

Octaves:

Dictionary.com says an Octave is:

The interval of eight diatonic degrees between two tones of the same name, the higher of which has twice as many vibrations per second as the lower.

Here is what an octave difference sounds like:

Lines and Spaces:

Spaces:

F A C E

The spaces, from bottom to top, spell out FACE. So if a note was positioned on the lowest space on the staff it would be an F.

Lines:

E G B D F

The Lines, from bottom to top, are E G B D F. This can stand For Every Good Boy Does Fine. A note positioned on the middle line would be a B.
